This book was derived in part from an earlier text, Human Communication and Its Disorders, by Daniel Boone and Elena Plante. The current text retains the strong introduction to communication processes and disorders, and is complemented by the focus on clinical illustration of normal and disordered speech, language, and hearing. It provides an introduction to the field that engages the students' interests in professional practice and welcomes them into the major. A lifespan perspective on disorders from infancy through geriatrics is presented while highlighting what is exciting about speech-language pathology and audiology as career choices. The chapters reflect insights gained from first-hand clinical, research, and teaching experience across a variety of clinical populations.
The authors include many case studies to introduce and exemplify various communication disorders. These clinical cases bring the book to life and give the reader an appreciation for the clinical and scientific endeavors embodied within the fields. The single most significant feature of this book is its clinical focus. It begins and ends with chapters that focus on the professionals in the field and what they find engaging about their careers. The authors use case-based instruction, even in chapters dealing with basic science information. This broad-based introduction presents the range of content central to the professions, yet maintains a consistent, easy-to-comprehend style and unified voice throughout.
