Excerpt: ... LETTER II.--»-©«--Rev. Sir, I come now to make a few observations on your second T ract, which is, indeed, closely connected with the subject of the first. For having, as you think, completely therein done away the idea of regeneration after baptism, you, in the second Tract, think of doing God service, by setting aside our idea of looking for any spiritual, radical, and essential conversion to God, though we have had none in baptism, for our hungry and thirsty souls. Indeed, if baptism is regeneration, what need, or possibility of any conversion afterwards? But I always understood, and I thought every one else did so, that conversion went before regeneration, and was posterior to repentance. But now to make good your argument, you attack the spiritual flights of enthusiastic fervour, and the irregular sallies of a warm imagination, in the doctrines and societies of the late Rev. Mr. G. Whitefield, and the late Rev. Mr. John Wesley,,the former supposed to be the chief calvinistic, and the latter the chief arminian founder of methodism, sectarianism, or puritanism, either revived, or instituted. And to tin-s purpose, you have taken for your text or motto, the following very significant words ef our Lord, in Matthew XVIII. 23, viz. "And he called a little child, and set him in the midst of the disciples, and said, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the Kingdom of Heaven;" which clearly teaches us the divine and all important lesson of spiritual humility, innocence, simplicity, and obedience. On this topic, you complain heavily of the-evangelical clergy of the church of England, whether self-denominated, or denominated by their hearers, evangelical, I cannot tell, but a very severe reflection, I must...
