Excerpt: ...it is not surprising that the name of Sir William Throckmorton does not again occur; but Major Throckmorton was Parliamentary Governor of Monmouth at the time of its sudden recovery by the King's forces in December, 1644. In the year of the Eestoration, Sir Baynham, son, probably, of the above, and-who had been returned a member of the Commonwealth Parliaments of 1656 and 1658, obtained the grant of the three-fold offices of Keeper or Gaveller of the Gawle, Biding Forester, and Aleconner in the Forest of Dean, whilst in the one following, namely, 1661, his father applied for a renewal of the Patent granted Sir William in 1618 of the Wood and Iron work in the Forest of Dean.f They seem, however, to have been awarded to Sir John Winter. At this period Sir Baynham Throckmorton, junior, took an active part in all legal transactions occurring within the Forest. As Deputy Constable for Lord Herbert he presided at all sessions of St. Briavel's Court, and at those of the Mine Law, both of which he seems to have been the first to revive soon after the Eestoration, neither of them having sat for a long period previously. The Book of "Eules and Orders" of the former, dated the 16th of November, 1663, bears his signature, and to him is attributed the introduction of the practice of examining witnesses upon oath.J He sat as Judge at three of the Courts of Mine Law by which the First, Third, and Fourth "Orders" were determined, in 1668, 1676, and 1680. These were all held at Clearwell, and perhaps in his own Court House there, except the last, which assembled at the Speech House, then just finished.
