In gula etfi distrahebant Remp. exercebant tamen illorum temporum eloquentiam, et magnis cumulare præmiis videbantur. Quia quanto quifque dicendo plus poterat, tanto facilius honores aflequebaturtanto magis in ipsis honoribus collegas suos anteibat, tanto plus apud principes gratiæ, plus autoritatis apud patres, plus notitiæ ac nominis apud plebem probabant.--Ita ad summa eloquentiæ præmia, magna etiam mceffitas accedebat, et commoda.--His accedebat splendor rerum et magnitudo causarum. Nam multum interest utrumne de furto, aut formula et interdicto dicendum habeas, an de ambitu comitiorum, expilatis soeiis, et civibus trucidatis. Quæ mala sicut non accidere mel;us est, isque optimus civitatis status habendus est, quo nihil tale patimur: ita cum acciderent ingentem eloquentiæ materiam subministrabant. Crescit enim cum amplitudine rerum vis ingenii; nec quisquam claram et illustrem orationem efficere potest, nisi qui causam parem inT venit. Non opinor Demosthenem orationes illustrant, quas adversus tutores suos composuit: nec Ciceronem, magnum oratorem P. Quintius defensus In like manner might one instance in Dancing, Playing, and indeed in almost every other art whatever; as it will, I am persuaded, universally be found, that they all turn their back upon nature, when once they have got one small remove from her. It is, for example, the business of the Dancing Master to teach a set of motions, which may give grace and ease to the human figure: but how much will he be disappointed, who (hall expect to see any thing like this amongst the ordinary teachers of this art?
