And after they were appointed, they were ordered to offer the daily sacrifice, and to burn incense before the Lord. And the incense which was burnt in the tabernacle was very sweet, and no one was allowed to make that incense for any other purpose. And the oil which was used for anointing the priests was holy oil, made of olives, and myrrh, and cinnamon, and calamus, and cassia; and this was holy oil, which might not be used except for the priests. And the priests were allowed to go into the Holy place, but only the high-priest might pass through the veil and go into the Holy of holies where the ark stood, and the glory of the Lord shone from the Mercy-seat. The priests were also ordered to explain the law to the people. There was only one high-priest, and when he died his eldest son was to take the office, so that there might always be a high-priest in Israel. CHAPTER XXI. THE GOLDEN CALF. Now Moses remained upon the mountain for forty days and forty nights, hidden in the cloud, and alone with God. And the people did not know what to do, for they had no guide, and they could not move forward nor go backward, and only Aaron was with them. So they spoke to Aaron and asked him to make them idols which should lead them. And Aaron asked them for the golden earrings which they wore, and they gave them to him, and he melted them in a great fire, and made the gold into a figure of a calf, and then said to the people, "These be thy gods, 0 Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt."
