Excerpt: ... 12 PROBLEM No. 3 1 General Situation.--An Eastern Army has been defeated at Thorn, and is retiring upon Warsaw. The Eastern Army is besieging Konigsberg, and occupies East Prussia with an East Division, which stands upon the line Braunsberg-Wormditt-Guttstadt. The victorious Western Army is pursuing the defeated Eastern Army in the direction of Warsaw, and sending a detached force towards Konigsberg. Situation up till December 1st at noon of the West Division detached towards Konigsberg. Composition of the West Division:--. T c _., (2nd Grenadier Regiment. 5th Infantry Brigade l9th do do 114th Infantry Regiment. 6th Infantry Brigade j 54th do. do. 12nd Rifle Battalion.?rd Cavalrv Brigade 3rd Dragon Regiment. 3ra Lavalry Bngade uhkn Regiment 1st Division 17th Field Artillery Regiment. 1st Horse Artillery Battery, 2nd Regiment. 1 st Company 2nd Pioneer Battalion. Divisional Pontoon Train. 1 st Sanitary Detachment. Total: 13 battalions of 1,000 men each, 8 squadrons of 150 horses each, 5 batteries of six guns each. Ammunition columns and trains:--1st Column Division. 1st and 2nd Provision Columns, 1st and 2nd Transport Wagon Columns, 1st to 4th Field Hospital. To cover the left flank of the West Army during its advance upon Warsaw, the West Division was pushed forward from Thorn to Deutsch Eylau. But when the Commander-in-Chief of the Western Army received intelligence that Konigsberg was besieged by only about 70,000 men, that the siege was at a standstill in consequence of the weakness of the besieging corps and of the energy of the governor of the fortress, who disposed of a garrison of 36,000 men; and, moreover, that the enemy's division standing upon the line Braunsberg-WormdittGuttstadt was scarcely 12,000 men strong, the orders of the Western Division...
