The people of England were satisfied--and I say it in defiance of all ex post facto interpretation of the Bible Society's primary law, and clamorous wisdom of those whom early and habitual apathy in a good cause may have saved from participation in ingenuous error--the religious public of England were satisfied that the question of the Apocrypha received its decision from the Committee as soon as the general sentiment of their constituents could be discerned as requiring or admitting of it--they were satisfied that a more precipitate closing of the question, however the public mind might have been ripe for it in Scotland (a point on which I cannot pretend to judge) would have been in England only a premature and unauthorised anticipation of a decision, which, in order to its being unanimously embraced and steadfastly adhered to, required to be made after full inquiry and deliberate examination of the merits of the case.
