Excerpt: ... celebration of the event of the day. The chapel was designed by Mr A. M. Dunn, of Newcastle, and accommodates 800 persons. July 29. A large building in Reed's Court, Newgate Street, Newcastle, occupied partly as a stable, and partly by Mr. Rowley, turner, and Mr. Watson, joiner, was entirely burnt to the ground. August 1. "The Northern Weekly Standard" was published in Newcastle for the first time. 5. At an early hour this morning, the extensive mill of Messrs W. Brown and Sons, in Clive Street, North Shields, was discovered to be on fire, and in a very short period the premises, with all the machinery, and about 500 quarters of wheat, were entirely destroyed. 8. The Marchioness of Londonderry gave her second annual dinner to the workmen on her estates, in her ladyship's park at Seaham. The number of guests, and the quantity of refreshments provided, were about the same as on the previous occasion. (See p. 376.) The chair was taken by Lord A. Vane Tempest, M.P., Lady Londonderry being seated on his right; and the Bishop of Durham, Hugh Taylor, Esq., and a number of gentlemen connected with the district, were present. In the course of the proceedings, Lady Londonderry intimated that if her workmen were willing to combine for the purpose of supporting their aged and infirm brethren, she would readily be at the expense of erecting a suitable building for the purpose, which should be termed the Pitmen's Home. 10. The Tyne Improvement bill (construction of docks at Coble Dean), and the Stockton Gas bill (empowering the Corporation to purchase gas works) received the Royal assent.
