If the applicant was attended by a physician during his attack, a statement from the doctor will frequently clear up matters sufficiently to enable the medical director to approve the risk, which otherwise he would have been compelled to decline. Bronchitis Bronchitis is an inflammation of the mucous membrane that lines the inside of the tubes of the bronchial tree. It is due to a great variety of causes, the commonest being an ordinary cold. Generally, it affects only the larger bronchial tubes, especially the trachea. The condition may be acute or chronic. An acute attack lasts, as a rule, a week or ten days, but the chronic forms, especially in elderly persons, may continue for years. When the bronchial tubes are inflamed by either an acute or chronic inflammation, there is formed on the surface of the mucous membrane a discharge or secretion. When the air that is breathed passes over this secretion, it produces a rustling noise, which can be heard on placing the ear or a stethoscope against the chest-wall. These sounds are known as rales. Tuberculosis is also generally associated with considerable chronic bronchitis and hence rales. Insurance Treatment Acute bronchitis is of no moment from the insurance standpoint, unless the attacks are very frequent and very severe; but an agent should not, in justice to his applicant, have a risk examined while he has bronchitis or a cold on his chest. The doctor will report finding the rales and the case will have to be postponed until the applicant has recovered from his bronchitis, because the medical director can never be sure but that the rales may mean chronic bronchitis or even incipient tuberculosis.
