Excerpt: ... LECTURE V. In our last discourse you may remember that Christian and Hopeful had turned from the straight and narrow way, along which they had been travelling, into Bypath Meadow. The way had been rough and difficult; they perceived that the road through this meadow was smooth and easy, and they immediately decided upon trying it. They did so, and you may remember the danger in which they were soon placed. Night overtook them; and the darkness and the tempest together prevented their returning. They obtained a little shelter, where they rested until daybreak; but, being weary and fatigued, they fell asleep. Bypath Meadow clearly warns pilgrims of the absolute necessity of being constantly on the watch at every portion of their journey. There is only one road which leads to the Celestial City, and along which we must all travel if we wish to reach that glorious place. It is a straight and narrow way, and oftentimes a very rough and difficult way; but, nevertheless, we must continue in it, and not seek a smoother and easier road if we hope to be secure. The difficulties and hardships which beset us in this world must be met and overcome; we must not seek to avoid them by committing some sin. Most, if not all, of us have our various trials--some are more severe than others--still they must be encountered and not shunned. Oftentimes when a person is in a great difficulty, an easy mode of extricating himself appears, but let him beware that that easy way does not lead him into a greater difficulty. All who follow Christ must be prepared to undergo hardship and suffering; they must learn to deny themselves and take up the cross. Let us remember, whenever we are in trouble or difficulty, the hardships and sufferings to which Jesus was exposed whilst on earth. Le...
