I have had a good deal of:perience of patents for many years.... Taking the present state the law, my impression is that we should be better without I think the excessive cumbrousness of it, and the extreme regularity and uncertainty in the effect of decisions on the subject, id the considerable trouble given to manufactures and commerce, rticularly of the smaller character, are so great under the present stem, that although perhaps I am not theoretically in favour of the olition of patents, if a good mode of granting them could be devised, hink no patent law at all would be better as compared with the present stem. In the early periods of the patent law, inventions were rare, d persons who made inventions had generally few competitors; there'e they devoted a considerable amount of time to the maturing of?ir inventions, and the inventions stood out with considerable disctness one from another. But as time went on, and particularly len we come to the present century, with the rapid increase which 3 been going on in every branch of scientific inquiry, and the facility scientific adaptation, they crowd on each other so, that in fact it is possible to define where one invention ends and another begins, at leads to this difficulty: We will suppose there are twenty-four inltions running over a certain period, and running into each other; we 1 suppose that litigation ensues between C. and D., who are neither the t nor the last in our alphabet: assume that C. has added an imporit improvement to the invention of A. and B.; the...
