Excerpt: ... CHAPTER IV. THE PREDESTINARIAN CONTROVERSY--THE PELAGIAN AND AUGUSTINIAN CONTROVERSY--THE ARMENIAN CONTROVERSY. WE have seen the origin and progress of the Pelagian and Augustinian controversy. That between the Calviriists and Arminians relating to Divine predestination and grace is but a revival and continuance of the same controversy, the remote origin of which may be traced to the Stoical and Peripatetic schools. The difference of opinion between Luther and Calvin related to other subjects, and not to the Divine decrees; and the views of the former in regard to the moral impotence of man's depraved nature were as strong as those of the latter. The reformers were substantially agreed as to the doctrines which are now called Calvinistic; and even Arminius did not hold those latitudinarian notions which are the characteristics of the system which is called by his name. Episcopius, who was more properly the author of this system than Arminius, modified the doctrines of original sin and grace; and Limborch and Le Clerc advanced much further towards Pelagianism and Neology. The five points which gave name to the Quinquarticular controversy between the Calvinistic and Anti-Calvinistic divines are, as we have seen, first, predestination or election; secondly, the extent of redemption; thirdly, the depravity of human nature; fourthly, effectual calling; fifthly, the final perseverance of all believers. These five questions are, whether election be absolute or conditional; whether redemption by the death of Christ be general or particular; whether the corruption of human nature be total or partial; whether grace be irresistible or not; whether the perseverance of the saints be absolutely certain.
