William Styron earned a commission as second lieutenant in the U.S Marine Corps in 1945, shortly after his twentieth birthday. Early in 1951, as he was composing the last two chapters of his manuscript, Styron was recalled into the Marine Corps for service in Korea., The stories of "The Suicide Run" are set in the gruelling camps and sweltering training fields that marked the limbo point between civilian life and the horrors of war. Born at Newport News, Virginia, in 1925, William Styron was educated at Duke University. He served in the Marine Corps during the Second World War, and was recalled to service during the Korean War. After 1952, he lived mainly in Europe, before settling in a rural part of Connecticut.In 1968 he won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for The Confessions of Nat Turner.He is also the author of the award-winning Sophie's Choice, Lie Down in Darkness, This Quiet Dust and a best-selling memoir, Darkness Visible.
