Johann Gottfried Herder (1744-1803) was a leading figure of the Sturm und Drang literary movement in Germany and an innovator in the philosophy of history and culture. His many other books includeTreatise on the Origin of Language, Yet Another Philosophy of History for the Education of Humanity, andOn Knowledge and Sensation in the Human Soul. Jason Gaiger is Lecturer in the Department of Art History at the Open University. He has published widely in the field of art history and aesthetics and is is coeditor ofArt in Theory 1815-1900 and Art in Theory 1648-1815.
