Although complexity surrounds us, its inherent uncertainty, ambiguity, and contradiction can at first make complex systems appear inscrutable. T. F. H. Allen is professor emeritus of botany and environmental studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is coauthor, most recently, of Supply-Side Sustainability. Thomas B. Starr is adjunct associate professor of environmental sciences and engineering at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
