W Towrie Cutt was born and brought up in the Orkney island of Sanday. His family, a large and loving one, was part of a small self-sufficient community which lived by its own efforts and made its own amusements. The children walked to school through a landscape that changed only with the seasons, their fathers were farmers or fishermen, their mothers kept the house. The only contact with the outside world was through the steamers which called regularly and in the summer brought home older brothers and sisters who had left to work on the mainland. People were tough because the climate was rugged, life was frugal, but hunger and real cold were unknown.
