Excerpt from Order and Mission; A Limited Commission Essential to the Sacred Ministry: A Sermon, Preached at the Ordination Held by the Lord Bishop of Kildare, on the Feast of Saint Michael and All Angels, 1837
We hear it commonly said at present, that every clergyman has, by virtue of his ordination alone, a right to preach the Gospel to every creature under heaven. He is the servant of Christ, called and sent by him, and, therefore, in the exercise of his ministry responsible to no earthly superior. The whole world is his parish, and, as far as he has access and opportunity, every human being on earth is committed to his care. I donot wish to misrepresent the opinions of any man living. I do not stand here this day as a controversialist or a partisan. The popular notion I believe to be as I have stated it; and, unless this were substantially the opinion at present maintained, the question of submission to authority would soon be at an end among all well-intentioned persons.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the right of bishops to control the ministry of clergy within their Church. The author, a clergyman, establishes that limited ministerial authority has been the norm from the time of the apostles to the present day. The author traces the distinction between ministerial order and mission through the Old and New Testaments, observing that even Jesus Christâs ministry was limited in time and place. The apostles, too, despite receiving authority from Christ to preach to all nations, were not without limitation. Instead, they awaited further instruction from the Holy Spirit before commencing their mission. The author then examines the ministry of the early Church, particularly focusing on the role of bishops in ordaining and overseeing clergy. The author concludes that a limited commission is essential to the ministerial office, and that this principle remains true in the present day.
