At times it is desirable to close temporarily an artery during an Operation by exposing the artery and compressing it with a tape the ends Of which are held in a clamp, or kinking the artery by traction on a loop around 'the vessel, or even temporarily ligating the vessel. Such conditions arise in head operations where temporary control of one external carotid may suffice or that of both common carotids may be needed.
