Le groupe que j'apel lerai le gaulois pur avait moins de ressources d'intri gue et de manoeuvres habiles que les Provençaux et Gascons, moins d'habitude politiqueet de prudence sociale que le camp genevois et anglais; mais il com pensait ceslacunes par de l'ardeur, de la générosité, de la pétulance, de l'obstination et de la verve; beau coup de logique inutile et de trait satirique, c'est - à dire par les qualités et les dons, plus utiles dans la société et dans la chaire professorale, que dans les affaires. Aussi occupa - t-il la dernière place.
