Mais le bref récit des Actes, et les traditions, rares ou incertaines sur ces origines, ne nous ont fourni qu'une peinture indécise en bien des points. L'âge suivant (de h5 à 62) se présente dans un jour autre ment vif. La narration de saint Luc, à partir du Xlll' chapitre des Actes, cesse d'être le mémorial de Pierre pour devenir celui de Paul; le premier s'efface du récit inspiré pour laisser la haute main à son frère d'apostolat dans la lutte contre le judaïsme.
