Excerpt from Sur le Front: War Stories
The Italian saying 'se non è vero è ben trovato' is never truer than when applied to short stories bearing upon events of the day, the work of capable writers. If not true in every detail such stories represent truth; they are the illustrations, so to speak, of a true state of things, they are truthful in their representation of mental attitude and physical possibilities; they lead to a true understanding of the people, the countries, the incidents they describe, the scenes among which they are pictured. And while the French are past masters in the art of writing a short story, the British boy and girl at school or college is unsurpassed in power of appreciation of a terse, well - told tale. Politicians may make treaties of Entente: the object of such treaties reciprocal cordiality and sympathy-must rest on a right understanding between nations of each other's nature and points of view. Such an understanding can only be arrived _at by intercourse, personal or literary, from youth up.' It is to our youth we must.
