En 1823, les toiles et les serges de Roquefixade avaient acquis une telle réputation dans le pays que, pour répondre à d'incessantes commandes, on dut songer à augmenter la fabri cation. Jacques Servieres était mort, et l'aîné de ses fils, Jérôme lui avait succédé dans la famille avec l'autorité d'un roi absolu. Jérôme parlait, et on se rendait à ses avis; il commandait, et on obéissait. Lui seul avait obtenu de son père, véritable person nage féodal, la permission de se marier, et cette faveur, que ses frères n'auraient pas osé solliciter, le montait haut dans leur estime. Malheureusement, l'union de Jérôme Servieres avec Célestine Lavit, de Rosis, n'avait pas été féconde: un enfant unique était né, Frédéric, un garçonnet chétif, âgé de douze ans en 1823.
