Pierre Imbart de la Tour, lorsqu'il fut emporté pré maturément par une crise d'angine de poitrine le 18 décembre 1925, travaillait depuis un quart de siècle à son histoire de la Réforme en France. Dans un pre mier volume, consacré à la France moderne, il avait décrit le milieu social où la Réforme a pris naissance; dans le second, qui a pour titre l'église catholique, la crise et la Renaissance, il s'était efforcé de reconstituer le milieu moral et religieux, la rupture de l'équilibre médiéval, le régime d'anarchie et de contrainte qui avait succédé à une ère de liberté et d'ordre, et le grand efiort de régénération religieuse en accord avec la culture nouvelle, humaniste, dont l'essor fut soudaine ment arrêté et la marche déviée par la naissance et par les progrès de l'évangélisme, dus à l'action de Luther. Ce volume, le troisième; où il retraçait les débuts dela révolution religieuse, devait être suivi de deux autres, consacrés, l'un à Calvin et l'autre au Parti protestant.
