Excerpt from Separation and Purification Section: Summary of Activities, July 1969 to June 1970
The dependence of the swollen volume of an ion exchange resin upon humidity is believed to be a thermodynamic property and, therefore, path independent. The testing of this hypothesis has not been thoroughly examined beyond the initial studies of Boyd and Soldano [3] who first established experi mental consistency with isopiestic water vapor pressure equilibrations of various ion exchangers. At water vapor pressures corresponding to water activities of less than slower swelling or deswelling rates are expected. In addition, there is a possibility that repeated swelling cycles towards higher humidities could be influenced by resin structural changes.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book, written by the author of several other key texts in the field, presents detailed accounts of work done by the researchers in the Separation and Purification Section of the National Bureau of Standards. The book contains a thorough examination of various analytical chemistry methods such as gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, and ion exchange. Readers will find an in-depth exploration of the use of steric exclusion chromatography for the analysis of clinical Standard Reference Material, bilirubin. The book also investigates particle contamination in inorganic salts and container walls. It touches on the use of infrared analysis to measure the crosslinking in poly(styrene/divinylbenzene) copolymers and the use of light and electron microscopy for particle characterization. The ideas and insights in this book will be appreciated by researchers who utilize and develop analytical methods in their work.
