Excerpt from Drying Machinery and Practice: A Handbook on the Theory and Practice of Drying and Desiccating, With Classified Description of Installations Machinery, and Apparatus; Including Also a Glossary of Technical Terms and Bibliography
This handbook is intended to give an insight into the art of Drying, and descriptions of typical designs of the machines and apparatus used in Drying and Desiccating.
In order to do so the general principles which govern the various methods of removing moisture (water) from all kinds of materials have been briefly stated, followed by a summary of the several methods employed, together with the tables of calculations necessary in deciding the requisite capacities. Then the apparatus, machinery, and installations of plant are described and illustrated by modern typical examples. These have been chosen by the makers as worthy of bearing their name, and the descriptions have in every case been passed by them.
The innumerable kinds of material which have to be dried, the varying degrees to which this dryness is needed, and the many types of apparatus which are in use open up a vast field for research. As it is quite impossible to deal exhaustively with such a wide subject, or while retaining a due proportion to exhaust even one section, there has been added a Bibliography so that reference can be made to the entire literature on any desired point. The Glossary of Terms appeared to be an absolute necessity in the absence of any authoritative manual on the subject, and it is hoped this may form a basis for future use of the terms and classifications.
