Excerpt from Metrical Rhythm: Being an Examination of a Recent Attempt to Determine the Basis of English Rhythm in Verse and Prose
Having thus cleared the ground, Mr. Thomson next 7 to 12) applies his method to the phenomena of English speech. He claims that while the distribution of time over the syllables between the accents might conceivably be quite irregular, as a matter of fact it is regular, and usually conforms to what the musician calls Triple Time. This Time he accordingly considers the real basis of English rhythm, in prose as well as verse, while admitting exceptions both through irregularities and through the occasional intru sion of Common Time, in either its duple or quadruple form. The difference between prose and verse he describes shortly thus (end of In poetry [scilicet verse], variation within the foot is limited; in prose it is free. Metre [this word here used for the first time] may occur in prose, but it must not be perceptible, as it is in verse.
