Excerpt from Functions and Needs of Our Great Markets
It must be admitted that in making prices daily the great market performs a most comprehensive, highly important and necessary feat which no other known agency can perform. Crop - reporting agencies greatly assist, but only the trading mart can serve as the crucible in which prices current are evolved out of the conditions of supply and demand. In relation to the entire world product of any commodity, as of wheat or cotton, the markets assemble as much as they can of the facts available concerning the supply afforded by the previous crop, also concerning the raw and finished products in store and in transit; concerning the acreage and condition of grow ing crops and also concerning the present and prospective demand.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the functions and needs of markets across the world and throughout their history. Unlike national crop reporting systems, markets have international scope and consider production and supply in addition to demand. The book explains how markets have combined these factors to crystallize and determine commodity prices. The author argues that while markets serve a necessary purpose in setting prices, they have serious flaws in that their speculative trading does not accurately reflect actual conditions. Entities such as the Louisiana lottery exploit this flaw, and the markets' current speculative practices lead to economic consequences for the public. The book highlights the need for reform to preserve elements of the market that are beneficial while eliminating the excesses. Ultimately, the book asserts that in order to address these issues, more people need to become engaged with these institutions from both philosophical and practical standpoints.
