Excerpt from Observations on the Growth of the Mind: With Remarks on Some Other Subjects
But the time is approaching when the claims of the New Church on the public attention may not be easily set aside. There is a problem to solve, to which those who reject the claims of this Church, will find it difficult to furnish a solution; and the misrepresentations and ignorance which have often prevailed in regard to it, will, be fore many years, be seen to be neither consistent with good manners nor good scholarship. The writings of Swedenborg are so pure in their character and influence, that the moral sense ofthe community will bear testimony that' there is no wilful imposture; and they are so perfect in their method and logic, that the rationality of the com munity Will bear testimony that there is no insanity. The voice of these two witnesses cannot be silen ced; and the day is approaching, when the assertion that these writings are not of sufficient importance to command the attention of the public, will not be hazarded by any one, who either is a man of intelli gence or seeks to be so esteemed.
