Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the debate over the building of a bridge from South Street to South Boston in 1804 by presenting a critique of a pro-bridge pamphlet and an extensive inquiry into the consequences and implications of such a project. The author, through a close reading of a pro-bridge pamphlet, examines the multiple "falsehoods" the author employs to support his pro-bridge position and challenges their arguments point by point. The book offers a detailed examination of the negative aspects of the proposed bridge and the potential financial and environmental impact it would have on the surrounding areas. The building of the bridge would "block up" the harbor, jeopardize the livelihood of many, and create an unneeded passage where a better option already existed. The book places the debate within the broader historical conflicts between established interests and emerging commercial concerns. It reflects the competing interests and tensions that existed at the time of America's infrastructural growth. The author's arguments and insights provide significant context and considerations for understanding the social, commercial, and economic struggles of a growing country building its infrastructure.
