As the systematic study of conchology gained steam thanks to rising interest in geology, the author found himself drawn to the beautiful and varied species of this family. The volume contains descriptions of six new species of Unio and observations on genera such as Symphynota, Anodonta, and Helicina. The author was particularly fascinated by the unique geographical distribution of these species across the eastern and western sides of the Alleghany ridge and how this divide appeared to have a major effect on the speciation of Naiades.
