It also explores the wider context of education in Pennsylvania at that time, in particular the significance of the Normal School Law of 1850. Legislative changes that year made it a priority for principals of the state's Normal Schools to meet and create a general course of study. The text then examines the school's curriculum, which was designed to train teachers and provide foundational instruction in the liberal arts. The author's meticulously compiled research provides valuable insight into the origins and early years of this historic institution.
