Full reports of the important batch of mining company meetings held during the week, will be found in this issue. Regarding the result of the Wit. Deep meeting, the legality of which may be tested in the law courts, perhaps the less said at this juncture the better. Moreover, when the mail brings the proxies now overdue from oversea, doubtless a special meeting will be called to reverse the decisions arrived at by the snatch vote of last Monday. Nor does the posit-ion disclosed at the meeting augur well for the Wit. Deep, ias'the clearly indica'ted'certainty of the closing down of the former, unless conditions improve, cannot fail to affect the fortunes of the latter. A' study iof the statements made by the Chairman, Mr. Wallers, by Sir Henry Ross Skinner. And by Mr. E. Renaud at' the meeting holds out little hope for that property under present conditions. Everything humanly possible seems to have been done by the directors to save 'the situation, but the adverse circumstances have been too strong, and it would seem that milling must inevitably stop at the end of 1919. It is a relief to turn to the splendid development picture presented at the Springs meeting, though'hore again a small but articulate minority have made a ttrong protest against the policy of the directors. Whether there will be any tangible result of that protest remains to be' shown by the poll on Monday: The' New Kleinfontein meeting, likewise, had varied features. And' the very' conservative tone of the Chairman's speech was doubtless amply just'fied in view of all the facts. Col. Dalrymple put the whole position in a nutshell by saying: 1 The outlook as regards the labour position and gerieral' conditions was not reassuring, and'whilst our. Policy Should'be, and was, to keep operations at the maximum.
