Excerpt from Views and Memoranda of Public Libraries: Containing 450 Illustrations, Portraits, and Plans
The name of J. Passmore Edwards is almost a household word, and there are few in any rank of society but know at least some little about his philanthropic work for the poor; mentally, morally, and physically - mentally and morally, in his gifts of libraries, art galleries, museums and schools; physically, in his gifts of hospitals and convalescent homes. Mr. Edwards was born in Cornwall, which county has naturally received much consideration from him, and holds him in high esteem. His journalistic enterprises have been singularly successful, and have thus enabled him to devote an immense sum to philanthropic undertakings. He was for Salisbury 1880-5, and some years ago he was offered a title by Her late Majesty Queen Victoria, but respectfully declined the honour. It need scarcely be said that he is a man of wide intellectual endowments, and of the utmost liberality of opinion on all subjects.
The following list of institutions he has founded may be of interest.
