Excerpt from The Gospel According to St. Luke: With Introduction, Notes, and Maps; Chapters I.-XII
This Commentary on the Gospel of St. Luke has been written with the view of supplying as far as possible the kind of informa tion required by the teacher of a Bible class or a senior class in a Sabbath school. It does not pretend to be a critical exposition Of the Gospel from a new and original point of view, and the author has made free use, always with due acknowledgment, of every available source of information.
The introduction, analysis, and divisions have been made on the principle of looking at the Gospel of Luke as a life of Christ written for the Gentile converts of St. Paul. Accordingly the Introduction includes a Short statement Of the social and political state of Palestine, and of the Jews within the Roman empire, during the period of the Apostolic Church. Text-books of this kind should be as complete as possible, and I have not scrupled to include in this volume a good deal of material to be found in my Commentary on Si. Mark's G'05pel. I have taken most of the analyses of our Lord's discourses from Professor Godet's Commentary.
