September 1, 1916, the Library of Congress addressed the following circular letter to 232 historical societies, university and public libraries, and other learned institutions in the United States: dear sir: The Library of Congress is desirous of having in its files information of the location of the important collections of the papers of prominent Americans, civil, religious, and military. It would, therefore, appreciate a list of such collections of original manuscripts in your custody, giving the inclusive dates and descriptive title of the individuals whose papers are listed.
