This analysis sheds light on the colonial policy of the time and illustrates the methods of imperial control over colonial legislation. The author examines 59 public and private acts disallowed by the Crown, classifying them according to the chief reasons for their disallowance. The analysis reveals that eight were disallowed for being contrary to the Laws of Navigation and Trade, while 12 were disallowed because they were repugnant to the Laws of England or were not properly drawn up. Moreover, 17 acts were disallowed because they disregarded the Royal Prerogative, and 12 were considered harmful to English or colonial subjects. This book contributes to our understanding of the complex relationship between Britain and its American colonies during the 18th century, making it a valuable resource for scholars and students of colonial history.
