Excerpt from A Champion in the Seventies
And this one thing seems first to bear in mind. Both sides meant well. All strove for the best as each saw it. Neither adversary was wholly base; had one been so, he would have been so speedily vanquished that there would have been no conflict worth telling of. And neither adversary was Wholly noble; had one been that, the issue of the conflict would never for a mo ment have been doubtful. But the fault was not Wicked ness, but rather stupidity; what they lacked, what we all lack, was not good-will, but rather wisdom. And the stupidest action of all the many that we commit is to fancy that our party collectively, or that any one of us individually, may hold a monopoly of truth.
After all, I cannot find it in me to regret the war. This is a fighting world, and the one unpardonable sin is laziness. But when, in telling this story of the early campaign, I import thereinto any bitterness of feel ing, then and in so far, I have failed to do what I intended.
That victory will be for the right I do not for one moment doubt.' Nor am I doubtful on which side the balance of right hangs. A judge may be impartial, yet, when all the stories have been heard, he should have his clear opinion as to the verdict that the jury should return.

Follow the Vassie family, whose self-assured patriarch, Mr. Vassie, retreats to his study to indulge in his scholarly pursuits. Meanwhile, Mrs. Vassie, a dutiful Victorian matriarch, struggles to balance the demands of a busy household. Through the eyes of the eldest daughter, Tabitha, we witness the tensions between tradition and modernity. As Tabitha questions the guiding principles of her upbringing, she clashes with her mother's unwavering belief in the established order. The arrival of Hilda, a worldly cousin from London, further challenges the family's insular existence, exposing the divide between rural and urban values. The author delves into the complexities of family dynamics, exploring the contrasting personalities and aspirations of the Vassie children. Each daughter grapples with her own desires and expectations, navigating the social conventions and limited opportunities available to women of their time. Ultimately, this book offers a poignant exploration of the transformative power of perspective. By juxtaposing the devout faith of Mrs. Vassie with Tabitha's yearning for intellectual freedom, the author illuminates the ways in which our beliefs shape our experiences and our relationships with others.
