Excerpt from What Must We Do to Be Saved?: A Lecture

IF what is known as the Christian Religion is true, nothing can be more wonderful than the fact that Matthew, Mark and Luke say nothing about salvation by faith; that they do not even hint at the doctrine of the atonement, and are as silent as empty tombs as to the necessity of believing any thing to secure happiness in this world or another.

For a good many years it has been claimed that the writers of these gospels knew something about the teachings of Christ, and had, at least, a general knowledge of the, conditions of salvation. It now seems to be substantiated that the early Christians did not place implicit confidence in the gospels, and did not hesitate to make such changes and additions as they thought proper. Such changes and addi~ tions are about' the only passages in the New Test ament that the Evangelical Churches now consider.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book embarks on a thought-provoking exploration of the foundations of orthodox Christianity, meticulously dissecting the New Testament and its interpretations. The author delves into the inconsistencies and contradictions within the gospels, questioning the authenticity of key passages concerning salvation by faith and the doctrine of the atonement. By scrutinizing the historical context and evolution of the Christian faith, the author challenges long-held beliefs about the nature of salvation, arguing for a morality-based understanding of religion rather than one rooted in miracles and dogma. The text delves into the disparity between the teachings of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, who emphasize acts of compassion and forgiveness as the path to salvation, and the Gospel of John, which introduces the concept of salvation through belief in Jesus Christ. This book boldly questions the church's role in shaping religious narratives and the impact of fear and superstition on human understanding of divinity. The author advocates for intellectual freedom and the courage to question established doctrines, contending that blind faith should not supersede reason and personal experience. By urging readers to embrace critical thinking and ethical conduct, this book encourages a reevaluation of traditional religious paradigms and a return to the core principles of kindness, honesty, and justice. The author's insightful analysis paves the way for a more inclusive and compassionate understanding of spirituality, reminding us that the true essence of religion lies in our actions and the positive impact we have on the world around us. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
