Excerpt from J. M. Synge, 1871-1909
Lilo Stephens' part in this undertaking and my indebtedness to her are something I cannot adequately Spell out here. At her dinner table I met some of the surviving relatives of Synge and many other people who helped me. She and I talked constantly about Synge when We Were not arguing about Irish politics or climbing over stone walls to explore ancient Irish churches or historic monuments of the Bronze Age. When the actual dimensions of my task became apparent she obtained permission for me to take all of the necessary documents back to the United States so that I could finish the writing at home.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This illuminating biography follows J. M. Synge, a writer whose life was as compelling as his plays. Born into an Anglo-Irish family in 1871, Synge's early years were marked by religious doubt and the decline of his family's fortune. Finding solace in nature and music, he enrolled in Trinity College, but his passion for the violin and Irish antiquities soon took precedence over his studies. By the 1890s, Synge had immersed himself in the Irish Literary Revival, where he befriended W. B. Yeats and Lady Gregory. Yet, his unorthodox beliefs and support for Irish nationalism alienated him from his family. The book delves into Synge's struggles with illness, his travels to the Aran Islands, and his groundbreaking works, such as "The Playboy of the Western World," which sparked riots for its portrayal of Irish life. This biography highlights the significant role Synge played in shaping Irish literature and identity, bridging the gap between the old guard and the rising generation of Irish writers.
