La nature m'a refusé le beau don de leloqùence impressionante bien que j'enseigne déjà à la petite université d'léna depuis 88 semestres, je n'ai jamais pu, lorsque je parais en public, surmonter une certaine crainte et jamais non plus je n'ai pu acquérir l'art d'exprimer les pensées qui m'agitent par des paroles enflammées, ni avec l'aide de gestes qui leur donnent la vie. Pour ces motifs et pour d'autres encore, je ne me suis/laissé convaincre que rarement de prendre part aux réunions de Naturalistes ou autres Congrès les quel ques discours que j'ai tenus dans des circonstances de ce genre et qui sont publiés dans mes Discours et Mémoires m'ont été arrachés par l'ardent intérêt que m'inspire la Lutte pour la Vérité. Dans les trois conférences quel'on va lire mes derniers discours publics je n'ai pas eu, plus'que dans les autres, l'intention de gagner mes auditeurs à mes convictions par' mon éloquence; mon but a été bien plutôt de leur présenter un exposé d'ensemble des grands groupes de faits biologiques de manière à ce qu'ils puissent se convaincre eux-mêmes, s'ils réfléchissent impartialement, de la vérité et de l'importance de la notion d'évolution.
