Ce que l'au teur peut dire en toute franchise, c'est qu il n'a pas cherché à produire un effet de paradoxe et de contraste, c'est que ce livre, écrit dans ces dernières années sous la pression des événe ments, arrive aujourd'hui à son terme par une simple coincidence de dates. La France n'est pas assez riche en traditions politiques pour que l'on contribue gratuitement à en effacer les vestiges, et l'auteur laisserait volontiers à d'autres le vain plaisir de pourfendre les principes de 1789, s'il n'avait acquis la conviction qu'à vouloir persister dans une tradition épuisée, dans une méthode politique caduque et stérile, on compromet l'exis tence même de la société française.
