Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the work of the prominent and erudite Roman scholar and commentator Cruquius, whose writings had a profound influence on the interpretation of Horace's Satires and Epistles during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The author delves into Cruquius' methods and sources, examining the ways in which he utilized and combined material from earlier commentators such as Porphyrio and Acron, as well as from other classical authors and his own conjectures. By analyzing Cruquius' annotations, the book reveals his philological approach, his understanding of the Horatian text, and his broader intellectual milieu. The author also discusses the reception of Cruquius' commentary and its impact on subsequent Horatian scholarship, demonstrating its enduring legacy in the study of Horace's works.
