Excerpt from Archbishop Laud
The intention of this series of studies of the lives of English bishops and priests is to suggest the significance of the man in the age in which he lived and in the movements within the Church with which he was con cerned. It is the general editorial policy to select a biographer sympathetic with the character with whom he deals, since, in the view of the editor, sympathy is necessary to understanding. The choice of subjects is entirely arbitrary, following no chronological order and no settled plan, and the writers represent every school of thought in the English Church. Each volume is individual, and the writer alone is responsible for its judgements.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the life and times of William Laud, a prominent figure in the Church of England during the 17th century. The author traces Laud's journey from his humble beginnings to his rise as Archbishop of Canterbury, exploring the intellectual and spiritual influences that shaped his unwavering commitment to the Anglican tradition. Set against the backdrop of the Reformation and the subsequent struggle for religious dominance in England, the book examines Laud's staunch opposition to both Puritanism and Roman Catholicism. It delves into the theological debates of the era, contrasting Laud's vision of a historically rooted and ceremonially rich Church with the austere doctrines of Calvinism. Through a meticulous examination of Laud's actions and motivations, the book sheds light on his efforts to promote order, discipline, and beauty within the Church. It explores his complex relationship with the monarchy and the challenges he faced in navigating the turbulent political landscape of his time. Ultimately, this book offers a compelling portrait of a man who dedicated his life to defending the Church of England's unique identity and whose legacy continues to resonate within the Anglican Communion today.
