Excerpt from A Sermon: Preached at the Ordination of the Rev. William Bates, in Northbridge, Mass., Nov. 5, 1845
For wise reasons God, for a long course of time, suffered the experiment to be repeatedly made, that men might everywhere see the result; and the result has been, everywhere and in all ages, the same. Every where experience has taught the same lesson, that the world by wisdom knew not God that human wisdom and human power could not enlighten and save the world; that without the influence of divine revelation and the interposition of divine grace, men would continue in error and sin; and idolatry and polytheism, with all their cruelty and licentiousness, would continue to o'verspread the earth.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. Written for Christian communities and pastors of the mid-19th century, this book explores the transformative power of preaching through the lens of a sermon delivered at the ordination of Reverend William Bates. The author, a devoted minister, reflects on the implications of the biblical verse "For after that in the wisdom of God, the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God, by the foolishness of preaching, to save them that believe". Through a thoughtful examination of the sermon's central ideas, the book celebrates the ability of preaching to enlighten, reform, and ultimately lead to salvation. The author emphasizes the role of the spoken word in conveying truth and inspiring faith, arguing that the simplicity of the message â" the "foolishness of preaching" â" belies its profound impact in bringing individuals to a saving knowledge of God. Moreover, the book delves into the nature of salvation itself, describing it not merely as a state of forgiveness but also one of ongoing transformation and sanctification. By delving deeply into the significance of preaching and its essential connection to the redemption of believers, this book provides a valuable resource for spiritual leaders and anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the role of faith in human transformation.
