The author, who was a Presbyterian minister, attempts to reconcile the religious climate of the city with the horrific cost of the fire. The author also draws from the context of other disasters in the region, such as shipwrecks and storms, and examines the ways in which people have throughout history attempted to draw meaning from such events. The book follows on from an older literary tradition of 'fire and brimstone' preaching which sought to connect the material world with the spiritual, while simultaneously acknowledging that human understanding of God's will is limited. Ultimately, the book seeks to encourage humility in the face of tragedy.
