Excerpt from Robert H. Hatch's Recitals
Out of respect to my mother's prejudice, in whose house I was staying, I had not installed Wanda there. She lived close by in an apartment furnished for her provisionally, for I still hoped to conquer my mother's resistance; but all my efforts failed; and as Wanda did not spare me many tears and regrets, I resolved to sat isfy her and celebrate the religious marriage, on which her heart was set, the civil having already been per formed.
