Excerpt from Directorium Chori Anglicanum: The Choral Service of the United Church of England and Ireland
But in the modern accepted version of Tallis, not only is the plain-song sometimes placed in the treble, sometimes in the tenor, and at other times completely obliterated, but the number of vocal parts varies from four to five, and a part of the Litany is included, which it is well known Tallis did not set at all, as well as a Response which was not added till some time after the death of the composer, who is made responsible for the whole service. The inevitable conclusion is that the arrangement specially attributed to Tallis, is a spurious, incongruous compilation, which is sure tomislead the congregation, and the use of which, at all times to be depre cated, becomes preposterously absurd when the choir consists of children only, or. Indeed, when any vocal harmony part is more prominent than the plain-song.
The second division of the Creed of St. Athanasius is intended for use in Churches where the Psalms are sung to Gregorian Chants.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book provides a comprehensive guide to the proper performance of the choral service in the Church of England. The author, a respected scholar of music and church history, draws upon authentic sources to present a clear and detailed account of the historical development of the service, and to lay out a practical framework for its contemporary execution. The book delves into the controversy surrounding the performance of Tallisââ â¢s service, arguing that many modern interpretations diverge significantly from the original, often obscuring the plain song and creating a disharmonious effect. The author offers an alternative arrangement that places the plain song prominently in the treble, allowing for greater flexibility and facilitating the congregationââ â¢s participation. The book also offers valuable insights into the correct performance of various other liturgical elements, including the Psalms, the Creed of St. Athanasius, the Litany, and the Collects. The author provides guidance on the pronunciation and delivery of these elements, as well as on the proper use of musical accompaniment. This book offers a meticulously researched and practical guide for those seeking a deeper understanding of the Church of Englandââ â¢s rich musical tradition.
