Excerpt from The Choral Friend: A Collection of New Church Music, Consisting of Original Anthems and Psalm and Hymn Tunes; Adapted to the Most Common Metres
Time, in the Index, give the number of seconds required for the singing Of one verse of the tune of hymn. Varying size, or different acoustic proportions of churches, more or less crowded houses, etc., may require more or less modification. Under peculiar circumstances a change of the key of the tunes may be justified. It was found necessary, for example, during our last war, to play many tunes even a, whole tone higher than they were written.
All the music contained in the work being composed or harmonized by the author, or written by others for this work (pp. 69, 114, and covered by Oopyright, parties wishing to copy will be accommodated on application to either author or publishers.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book is an extensive collection of Christian hymns. It contains almost 200 separate pieces of music, many of which are written by the author. The book is divided into two sections. The first section contains tunes the author composed during his tenure at two different churches in Brooklyn, and the latter section is mostly written for choir and congregational singing, composed during his near two-decade affiliation with Plymouth Church. The author traces the historical development of congregational singing, and provides helpful guidance for selecting the right tunes and instruments to best facilitate it. The tunes in the book feature a wide range of moods and styles, from the subdued and reflective to the jubilant and celebratory. The author provides informative prefaces for many of the songs, discussing their origins, significance, and intent. This book will be of interest to historians, music scholars, church musicians, and anyone who appreciates sacred music.
