Excerpt from The Recovery of the Lost Sheep of the Church of England by Home Missions in Her Large and Destitute Parishes: A Sermon Preached at the Opening of the Mission Chapel, Calvert Street, S. George's, East, on Thursday, November 27, 1856
This fundamental principle of the Church in her parishes seems to have been entirely lost sight of in most modern schemes for Church extension. And whilst the Church, through her Bishops, has given, by the solemn act of institution, the cure of the souls of a parish to one Priest; the State, through certain Church Building Acts, has given (or has afiected to give) exclusive cure of souls of parts of such parish to other Priests.

The sermon's central message is that people should turn away from sin and towards God to avoid eternal death. Stanley draws on the biblical story of the prophet Ezekiel to illustrate his points, arguing that God desires all people to repent and live, and that those who refuse will face eternal consequences. This sermon is a powerful reminder of the importance of making right choices and following God's will. It is a timeless message that is still relevant today, offering hope and guidance to those who are struggling with sin and seeking a better life.
