La mer est un élément capital pour la connaissance des peuples. La mer modèle les moeurs, comme elle fait les rivages. Tous les peuples marins ont du caprice, sinon de la folie, dans l'âme. Au soleil, le coup de vent les visite et balaie les nuages; la brume, dans le Nord, prolonge le délire. Le risque de la mer et le paysage marin agissent puissamment sur les nerfs de la nation; et par la langue, sur l'esprit. La Norvège parle une Iangue,brève, sèche, cassante; beaucoup moins sourde que le suédois, moins lourde et moins dure que l'alle mand, il me semble; d'un ton moyen entre l'allemand et l'anglais. Il est curieux que l'accent du breton, en basse-bretagne, soit assez semblable à celui du norvé gien; mais le norvégien n'a pas la cadence du breton, qui chante.
