Le risque de la mer et le paysage marin agissent puissamment sur les nerfs de la nation; et par la langue, sur l'esprit. La Norvège parle une Iangue,brève, sèche, cassante; beaucoup moins sourde que le suédois, moins lourde et moins dure que l'alle mand, il me semble; d'un ton moyen entre l'allemand et l'anglais. Il est curieux que l'accent du breton, en basse-bretagne, soit assez semblable à celui du norvé gien; mais le norvégien n'a pas la cadence du breton, qui chante.
